Why a separate tool is needed
In an electric vehicle the systems a combustion engine controls are replaced by the battery management system, the inverter and the charge control unit. A standard OBD2 tool either cannot reach these units at all or sees only a generic code. Cell voltages, temperature distribution, insulation resistance and battery health need software written for electric vehicles.
Measuring battery health
When an electric vehicle changes hands, the real condition of the battery accounts for much of what the car is worth, and the range estimate on the dashboard does not tell you. A state-of-health measurement shows what percentage of the original capacity remains and whether the cells have drifted apart. For an inspection business, that measurement alone justifies the tool.
Safety
Contact with the high-voltage circuit can be fatal. Work on the high-voltage side requires proper training and insulated equipment. The tools here are for diagnosis; physical work inside a battery pack is a separate competence.
