Fiat AdBlue Warning Light on Tipo, Doblo, Ducato and Talento: Causes and Reset

Fiat AdBlue Warning Light on Tipo, Doblo, Ducato and Talento: Causes and Reset

Fiat AdBlue Warning Light on Tipo, Doblo, Ducato and Talento: Causes and Reset

Short answer: the Fiat AdBlue light comes on for one of two reasons: the tank is low, or the SCR system has a fault. The low-level warning clears by itself after you add at least 5 litres of AdBlue. A "Check AdBlue system" message is a fault: non-conforming fluid, a pump or heater failure, a NOx sensor or a crystallised injector. It does not clear without reading the fault code. In both cases a continuous warning starts about 200 km before the lock-out; at 0 km the engine will not restart once it is switched off.
A blue droplet symbol on the dash, "Check AdBlue System", and sometimes "Engine will not restart in X km". It is one of the most common questions from Fiat Tipo, Doblo and Ducato owners, and mixing up the two kinds of warning makes it harder. Below: which Fiat diesels have AdBlue, the difference between the warnings, how the countdown works, how to refill correctly, why the light stays on with a full tank, which fault code means what, and how to reset it with a diagnostic tool.

Which Fiat diesels have AdBlue?

ModelAdBlueNote
Tipo 1.3 / 1.6 MultiJet (Euro 6b)No2016 to early 2018; NOx storage catalyst instead
Tipo 1.6 MultiJet 120/130 hpYes, from September 2018Tank about 12.5 litres, blue filler cap behind the fuel flap
Tipo 1.3 MultiJet 95 hpYes, from May 2019Same tank
Doblo (263)Depends on version and marketSome Euro 6 versions use a NOx storage catalyst; look for a blue cap
New Doblo (2023 on)Yes1.5 BlueHDi, shared with Berlingo and Rifter
Fiorino / Qubo 1.3 MultiJetYes, from 2019Tank about 11.8 litres
DucatoYes, from mid-20192.2 MultiJet3: tank about 19 litres

Fiat AdBlue symbol and warning messages

Fiat's handbook states that the fault warning also appears when non-conforming fluid is added or when AdBlue consumption is more than 50% above average, and it starts the same countdown.

The countdown and what happens at 0 km

When the level drops, a message and symbol appear. If you do not refill, further messages appear at set thresholds. About 200 km before the lock-out the warning becomes continuous with an audible signal. At 0 km the car keeps driving, but once the engine is switched off it will not restart. The same rule applies to the fault warning.

How to refill and how much is needed

  1. Correct fluid: AdBlue to ISO 22241 or DIN 70070. Never water or screenwash.
  2. Quantity: at least 5 litres, otherwise the warning will not clear and a locked engine will not start.
  3. From a bottle: after the warning, add no more than 6 litres from a non-screw container. With a pump nozzle, stop at the first shut-off.
  4. If locked out: after refilling at 0 km, wait 2 minutes before starting.
  5. Clearing: switch the ignition on without starting and wait for the indication to go off; it takes a few seconds to about half a minute.

Tank full but the light stays on

  • Poor or wrong fluid: the quality sensor flags it; drain, clean and refill.
  • Pump or heater failure: both sit in the tank module; an open heater circuit also shuts down the pump.
  • Crystallised injector: the dosing nozzle in the exhaust blocks and cannot deliver the dose.
  • NOx sensor: a faulty upstream or downstream sensor makes the system think the SCR is not working.
  • Wiring and connectors: corrosion at the tank connectors is common.

AdBlue fault codes

CodeMeaning
P203FReductant level too low
P20E8Reductant pressure too low
P20B9 / P20BAReductant heater A circuit open / performance
P2047Reductant injector circuit open
P20EESCR NOx catalyst efficiency below threshold
P2BA9NOx exceedance: insufficient reductant quality
P2BADNOx exceedance: root cause unknown
P2200 / P2201 / P229FNOx sensor circuit / range (sensor 1 upstream, sensor 2 downstream)

How to reset the AdBlue warning

  1. Read all codes in the engine and SCR modules.
  2. Fix the cause: fluid, pump, heater, injector or sensor. A code cleared without a fix comes back.
  3. Clear the code and run the service function: AdBlue or tank reset in the tool's service menu. Replacement parts may need to be coded to the vehicle.
  4. Road test and confirm the warning stays off.

Fiat vehicles from 2018 have a Security Gateway: a diagnostic tool reads codes but cannot clear them without a 12+8 bypass cable or an SGW unlock licence. Tools that perform the Fiat AdBlue reset include the Launch CRP 919X BT and the Autel MX808S. For the Peugeot-based new Doblo and Scudo see our Peugeot AdBlue guide; for the Trafic-based Talento, the Renault AdBlue guide.

Honest note

Disabling AdBlue with an emulator or software is not a legal fix for a road vehicle. In the EU, defeat devices that reduce emission control effectiveness are prohibited, and a diesel with missing or obviously defective emission control equipment fails its inspection with a major deficiency. The right fix for a fault warning is to find and repair the cause.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reset the Fiat AdBlue warning?

For a low-level warning, add at least 5 litres and switch the ignition on until it clears. A "Check AdBlue System" fault needs the codes read and the cause fixed, then a reset from a diagnostic tool.

What does the Fiat Ducato AdBlue symbol mean?

The blue droplet symbol means the AdBlue level is low. Together with "Check AdBlue System" it indicates a system fault rather than a low level.

How do I reset AdBlue on a Fiat Talento?

The Talento is based on the Renault Trafic, so it follows the Renault procedure: fix the cause, clear the codes and run the AdBlue reset with a tool that supports Renault.

Does the engine stop when AdBlue runs out?

Not while driving. At 0 km the engine will not restart once switched off. It restarts after at least 5 litres are added and you wait 2 minutes.

Does the Fiat Tipo have AdBlue?

Euro 6b Tipo diesels built before 2018 do not. The 1.6 MultiJet has it from September 2018 and the 1.3 MultiJet from May 2019.
