Citroën Ami, Fiat Topolino and Opel Rocks-e: the VCU3000 Now Reads Over OBD

The EVPT VCU3000, the unit that manages the powertrain on Stellantis' small electric vehicles, could until now only be opened by bench or boot — and both start by taking the unit out of the car. Flex 8.20.0.0 adds the OBD protocol for this unit: reading is done straight from the vehicle's diagnostic socket, with no need to touch the part itself.

What is in this article

Why this unit was a difficult job

There are three ways into a control unit: through the vehicle's socket (OBD), by removing the unit and powering it on the bench (bench), or by putting the microprocessor into boot mode and reaching its memory directly (boot). The further down you go, the stronger the access and the harder the preparation.

On the VCU3000 the first step was closed. However simple the job, it began by taking the unit out of the car: trim off, connector released, unit on the bench, then everything back together. Even when the operation itself is short, the removal and refitting eat most of the time. And every removal carries a small risk — a clip breaks, a connector tab tires, a cable ends up where it should not.

This is not particular to one car. Manufacturers keep closing OBD writing on newer vehicles, and tool makers keep reopening those doors one by one. The VCU3000 is one of the latest rounds of that race.

What 8.20.0.0 changed

With the MagicMotorsport Flex release of 16 September 2026, the OBD protocol became available for the VCU3000. Reading is done with Virtual Read, straight from the vehicle's diagnostic socket. The manufacturer's wording is plain: no need to physically access the unit, and nothing to remove.

In practice the car stays as it is, the cable goes into the OBD socket, and that is the whole job. The removal and refitting step — the longest and riskiest part — disappears.

Bench and boot are still there — how to choose

OBD support does not replace the existing methods; it joins them. For the same unit you can now take one of three routes, and the job decides which:

  • OBD — first choice when the unit allows it. No removal, no physical work, the shortest path.
  • Bench — when the situation calls for it, or when something goes wrong on the OBD side. The unit comes out and is powered on the bench.
  • Boot — when the unit is locked, a write was interrupted, or the software is damaged. Often the only way out.

Having all three open means the work decides the method, not the limits of the tool — which is the whole point of keeping OBD, bench and boot in one tool.

What exactly are these vehicles?

The Citroën Ami, Fiat Topolino and Opel Rocks-e are technically not cars but L6e light electric vehicles — the light quadricycle class. All three share a platform: a 5.4 kW (about 8 hp) electric motor, a 48-volt system and a body built for short urban trips. In several European countries they can be driven from the age of 14 to 16 without a car licence, which is the main reason they spread.

Where does the 45 km/h limit come from?

Top speed on these vehicles is 45 km/h, and that is not an arbitrary number: the definition of the L6e class requires it. The limit comes from how the vehicle is registered, not from what the motor can do — and it is applied electronically. Where? In the powertrain control unit this article is about: the VCU3000.

Speed limit activation is carried out through this same unit. The classic route is opening it in boot mode; with the new OBD support the unit can now be reached without removing it — which is what actually shortens the job and lowers its risk.

Who this matters to

  • Workshops handling electric vehicles — unit replacement, software updates and recovery after a failure.
  • Services already using Flex — once the tool is updated, this unit opens with no extra hardware. If the tool is new to you: Flex is an ECU and TCU programmer that carries OBD, bench and boot in one body.
  • Anyone choosing a tool — the worth of a programmer lies not in its hardware but in how fast its coverage grows. Release notes deserve as much attention as the contents of the box.

An honest warning

Being readable over OBD does not make every job easy. Before writing to a control unit you still need a full backup, a steady supply voltage and an operation that is never interrupted halfway. On an electric vehicle the high-voltage system is a separate matter; unqualified work there is both dangerous and a warranty problem.

Frequently asked questions

What is the VCU3000?

The electric powertrain (EVPT) control unit used on Stellantis' small electric vehicles — the unit that sits between the motor drive, the battery and the driver's commands. It runs an Infineon TriCore TC234L microprocessor.

Which vehicles use it?

Citroën Ami (2020 model year), Fiat Topolino (2024) and Opel Rocks-e (2021). All three are L6e light electric vehicles with a 5.4 kW motor and a 48-volt system.

Can the unit still be removed and worked on the bench?

Yes. Bench and boot have not been withdrawn. OBD was added alongside them, and the job decides which one to use.

Does this need extra hardware?

For OBD work the standard cable into the vehicle's diagnostic socket is enough. Bench and boot bring the Flexbox module and the relevant adapters into play.

Will this support reach an older software version?

No. New unit support arrives while the update subscription is active. A tool with a lapsed subscription keeps working, but it does not receive what new releases bring.

How fast is the Citroën Ami?

Top speed is 45 km/h. That limit is a requirement of the L6e class and it is applied electronically, in the powertrain control unit. The Fiat Topolino and Opel Rocks-e share the platform and the same limit.

Does the operation affect the vehicle's warranty?

Any intervention on a control unit is assessed under the manufacturer's warranty terms. On a vehicle still under warranty, this is a conversation to have with the customer beforehand.
