Does it perform active tests?

What does a diagnostic tool do?

A diagnostic tool connects to the vehicle's control units to read fault codes, show live sensor data and send commands to modules. A simple code reader only names the code; a professional tool lets you confirm which sensor it came from using live data, and reset the system once the fault is fixed.

Service work such as oil reset, DPF regeneration, electronic parking brake retraction, steering angle calibration and battery registration is also done with these tools.

Why are car, heavy vehicle and motorcycle tools separate?

The protocols differ. OBD2 is mandatory on cars and the socket is standard. Heavy vehicles use J1939 and manufacturer-specific protocols, often on a 14-pin socket. Motorcycles have no standard socket at all; each manufacturer uses its own connector, which is why those tools ship with a cable set.

A car tool plugged into a truck or a motorcycle usually sees no modules at all.
