AutoTuner Slave ECU and TCU Programming Tool
AutoTuner is a professional ECU programming and chip tuning tool built to read and write engine control units (ECU) and transmission control units (TCU). It brings three methods together in one device: through the vehicle's OBD socket, on the bench with the unit removed and powered externally, and in boot mode with direct access to the processor. The Slave version on this page is for workshops that source their files: reading and writing are yours, file preparation belongs to the Master you work with.
What sets AutoTuner apart: no subscription, no credits, no feature locks. Updates and new vehicle coverage download free of charge. The tool carries a 5-year warranty. Against competitors that charge an annual subscription, that difference compounds over three to four years.
What AutoTuner Does
Changing a vehicle's engine software means first reading that software out of the unit and then writing the modified version back. AutoTuner is the hardware that does both. It connects to a computer over USB and to the vehicle — or to a unit on the bench — with the cables supplied in the case.
Its scope is not limited to performance software. The same tool restores software after an ECU repair, recovers a unit left half-written by an interrupted flash, transfers data during unit replacement, and reads and writes transmission software. The manufacturer's compatibility list covers more than 23,000 control units.
Chip tuning
Reads injection, boost, torque and RPM maps and writes the edited file back.
ECU repair
Recovers units with corrupted software or units locked during an update, via boot.
Transmission (TCU)
Reads and writes automatic transmission control units.
Automatic checksum
Corrects the checksum on engine map data before writing, without being asked.
Virtual reading
On some units, work from a database match instead of physically reading the file.
Datalogger
Real-time logging: you measure what your change actually did on the road.
DTC reading
Reads fault codes, so you see the unit's state from the same tool after writing.
Back to stock
Returns the vehicle to its original condition — needed for dealer visits and warranty work.
How the Slave Version Works
The tool on this page is the Slave version. The file it reads out of a unit is encrypted, and only the Master you are linked to can open it. The Master edits the file and sends it back, and AutoTuner writes it to the unit.
Reading and writing are entirely yours; the only thing that comes from outside is the file itself. Preparing a tuning file is a separate skill and a separate investment — sourcing that part from a file provider is both faster and cheaper for a workshop starting out or running moderate daily volume.
| Comparison | Slave (this product) | Master |
|---|---|---|
| File read | Encrypted | Unencrypted, editable |
| Who prepares the file | The linked Master / file provider | The user |
| Number of providers | Tied to one Master | Unlimited |
| Supplying files to others | No | Yes — builds its own Slave network |
| Read and write | Yes | Yes |
| Best for | Workshops sourcing files externally | Workshops writing their own files, companies supplying dealers |
You can move to Master later. Under the manufacturer's published terms a Slave tool can be upgraded to Master for €2,000, and changing the linked Master costs €350 and requires approval. Starting on Slave is not a dead end. See our AutoTuner Master page for the Master version.
Connection Methods: OBD, Bench and Boot
OBD
Reads and writes through the vehicle's OBD-II socket without removing the unit. The fastest and lowest-risk method and the first choice whenever the unit allows it. The armoured OBD cable in the case is for this.
Bench
The unit comes out of the vehicle and is powered on the bench. Used where OBD access is closed or writing over OBD would be risky. The universal box (ATP060 connection board) and universal cable give solder-free access to the unit's pins.
Boot
Puts the processor into boot mode for direct access to its memory. It needs a contact point on the board; the probe positioning kit and BGA MCU hook in the case exist for exactly that. For locked, updated or corrupted units, boot is often the only way in.
OBD and Bench after mail-in unlock
For some protected units the manufacturer offers a mail-in unlock: the unit is sent in once and opened. After that the same unit can be worked on normally over OBD or bench.

Subscription and Updates: AutoTuner's Real Difference
When choosing an ECU programming tool, the purchase price is only part of the total cost. Most tools in this class run on an annual subscription or a credit system: after buying the hardware you pay every year for updates, and some protocols are sold as separate packages.
AutoTuner does not use that model. In the manufacturer's own words: no subscription, no credits, no feature locks; new vehicle coverage and software updates download free as they are released. The tool also carries a 5-year warranty.
The size of that difference is easy to see: on a subscription tool, three years of renewals add a substantial sum on top of the hardware price. On AutoTuner that line is zero. On the other hand, some subscription systems sell protocol packages modularly and so lower the entry price — which model suits you depends on how many years you plan to use the tool.
Software and Computer Requirements
| Requirement | Value |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Microsoft Windows 11 (32 or 64 bit) |
| Processor | x86 (Intel / AMD), above 2.5 GHz |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM minimum |
| Disk | 2 GB free space |
| Connection | One USB 2.0 port |
| Internet | 5 Mbps or faster |
| Screen | 1920 × 1080 |
| Virtual machines | Not supported |
The virtual machine note matters. If you were planning to run Windows on a Mac through Parallels or VMware and drive the tool from there, it will not work. A real Windows computer is required.
The software interface is available in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Dutch, Portuguese, Armenian, Russian and Arabic.
Supported Vehicles and Units

AutoTuner or Another Tool?
The closest alternative in our catalogue is MagicMotorsport Flex. The two follow different philosophies: AutoTuner sells one package with everything included and no subscription; Flex sells licences per processor family, which can lower the entry price if you work in a narrow scope. Compare all options on our ECU programming tools page.
Who It Is For
- Chip tuning workshops that source files from a provider
- Electronics shops repairing ECUs and transmission units
- Workshops doing unit replacement, cloning and software recovery
- Fleet workshops working on trucks, tractors and marine engines
- Workshops entering this field and keeping entry cost under control
Legal note: AutoTuner is professional workshop equipment. Work affecting emissions control hardware on road-going vehicles is subject to the regulations in force, and responsibility for use rests with the user.
